Diagnostic Endoscopy - Upper Endoscopy

Upper endoscopy is done if you have pain in your upper belly, acid reflux, trouble swallowing, or if you have blood in your vomit.

The procedure is done using a long, flexible tube called an endoscope. The tube has a tiny light and video camera on one end.

The tube is then put into your mouth and throat and goes through your esophagus, stomach and then into your duodenum.

Preparation for the endoscopy includes not eating or drinking anything eight hours before the test. Patients are sedated when undergoing this procedure.
