Upper endoscopy is a procedure where the doctor examines the upper digestive tract including the esophagus, stomach and the duodenum (part of the small intestine).
Upper endoscopy is done if you have pain in your upper belly, acid reflux, trouble swallowing, or if you have blood in your vomit.
Preparation for the endoscopy includes not eating or drinking anything eight hours before the test.
Patients are sedated when undergoing this procedure.
Side effects include feeling bloated or nausea.
